Moon Zodiac Signs or 12 Rashi in Vedic Astrology
Acharya Karan V – Since time immemorial, men have been curious to know what the future holds for them. In this quest of finding out what lies ahead, astronomy and astrology came into being. The Hindu Astrology, an ancient science devised by sages is based on Vedas. Recently christened as Vedic Astrology, it tries to predict future using zodiacal signs known as “Rasi” or “Rashi”. The basic calculations of these Zodiac Signs are different from Western Astrology, as in Vedic Astrology they are based upon the movement or cycle of Moon in comparison to its counterpart where we have Sun Signs or Zodiac Signs based upon movement of Sun.
The Vedic Astrology believes that the position of the planets influence a person’s life. People who have a deep faith in this system usually take guidance from astrologers who, after taking help from Vedic Astrology, can predict what lies in store for them. The 12 Rashi in Vedic Astrology are – Mesha (Aries) whose Lord is Planet Mars or Mangal, Vrishabha (Taurus) whose Lord is Planet Venus or Shukra, Mithun (Gemini) whose Lord is Planet Mercury or Buddh, Karka (Cancer) whose Lord is Planet Moon or Chandra, Simha (Leo) whose Lord is Planet Sun or Surya, Kanya (Virgo) whose Lord is Planet Mercury or Buddh, Tula (Libra) whose Lord is Planet Venus or Shukra, Vrishchik (Scorpio)whose Lord is Planet Mars or Mangal, Dhanu (Sagittarius) whose Lord is Planet Jupiter or Guru, Makar (Capricorn) whose Lord is Planet Saturn or Shani, Kumbh (Aquarius) whose Lord is Planet Saturn or Shani and Meen (Pisces) whose Lord is Planet Jupiter or Guru. Besides that, the five planets, i.e, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are also given much regard in Indian Astrology while drawing conclusions for the future. Sun (Surya) and Moon (Chandra) are considered as planet in astrology with unique attribute like all other planets. The remaining planets, due to their late discovery, are not considered in the Indian Astrology. Everyone falls into one of the 12 rashis described by Vedic Astrology. Each “Rashi” i.e. sign Mesh, Vrishabh, Mithun, Kark, Singh, Kanya, Tula, Vrishchik, Dhanu, Makar, Kumbh and Meen is represented by a planet as described above. This planet is referred to as “The Lord of the House” for that “Rashi”. For example, Mesh and Vrishchik have got the planet Mars assigned to them. In the zodiac, every planet reaches a point where it gains maximum strength. For example, the Sun or “Ravi” becomes powerful when it reaches the house of Mesha and turns weak when it arrives at the house of Tula.
According to this astrological system, there are 27 Nakshatras or the “houses of the moon”. It is believed that the changing faces of the moon have effect on the way we might take decisions. Whereas the moon is believed to be the lord of all the Nakshatras, the Sun is regarded to be the same for all the signs or “Rashis”. The moon, and its two points, “Rahu” and “Ketu” play a prominent role in a person’s life. The Nakshatra wise classification of every Rashi or Moon Zodiac is given below –
– Mesha Rashi includes Ashwani, Bharani, and Krittika Nakshatra (1st Pada).
