What is Reiki?
Acharya Karan V – Reiki is a therapeutic method for healing. Devised in Japan around 1922 by a Buddhist, Reiki has received a worldwide recognition as an alternative therapy. It has been adopted with little changes by various cultures of the world. The word “Reiki” is made up of “Rei” meaning “driven by the Supreme Being” and “ki” that is considered to be “a life force flowing through everyone’s body”. In Japanese spiritualism, “qi” or “ki” is believed to be an energy source that flows through every living being’s body. The constant and adequate flow of “qi” through one’s body ensures the feelings of happiness, elation, relaxation and well-being. An individual with proper “qi” force tends to be more receptive and adaptable to his surroundings. On the other hand, one with low “qi” flowing through the body is likely to develop negative vibes, depression and unresponsiveness to his surroundings.
A practitioner of Reiki uses various positions of his hands to gather “qi” or life force from the surroundings and releases it in a recipient’s body. One having a Reiki healing session is usually made to lie on a comfortable surface. The person performing Reiki healing puts his hands on recipient’s body, usually on the three designated places, i.e. head, front part of the body and back torso. A Reiki practitioner can follow various methods like, he can move his hands freely depending on a person’s energy flow or he may follow the systematically specified approach. The practitioner can also add more positions of the hand so as to make the healing process more enriching. Reiki has been used worldwide by the health professionals as an alternative medium of therapy. Though, most of the medical fraternity still believes that Reiki cannot replace the traditional treatment methods taken by the doctors, it can act like a supplement to quicken the curing phase for a patient. Lots of people suffering from terminal illnesses and receiving conventional treatment like Chemotherapy in case of Cancer have positively benefited from Reiki. One practicing Reiki sessions usually conducts the healing programs at various places like spa or yoga centers. Depending on the availability of the places, Reiki sessions have been conducted at workplaces also.
