ACHARYA KARAN V – Lord Bhairava, also known as Kaal Bhairav or Batuk Bhairav or Bhairon Baba, is one of the prominent forms of Lord Shiva. Lord Bhairav is considered to be a keeper of time and worshipping him is akin to respecting time. Though Lord Bhairava’s appearance is quite intimidating, with serpents decorating him like ornaments, a severed fourth head of Lord Brahma in one hand and various other objects in many other hands, having a third eye considered to be of supreme wisdom, he is venerated by his devotees as a benevolent and gracious one. When Lord Brahma became complacent with the fact that he was the one who played a major role in managing the universe, Lord Bhairav – born out of Lord Shiva’s nail, cut off one of his head making Lord Brahma come to terms with the reality.

Kaal Bhairava is also venerated as the supreme god of “Aghori” sect, one of the communities shrouded in mysteries in India. Lord Kaal Bhairava is honored as a keeper of time.
