Acharya Karan V – Lord Shiva is one of the prominent Gods holding a revered position in Hinduism. In Rig Veda, Shiva is regarded as the one spreading nourishment and fragrance of life. Amarnath Cave is held extremely sacred by Hindus and every year, pilgrims in the number of thousands, facing extreme weather conditions of the hilly area visit Amarnath to pay homage to their beloved God. The religious fervours gets accentuated by the very fact that, in spite of being located at such a high altitude of 12,756 ft, the devotees don’t get deterred by the hardships they face visiting the pilgrimage site. Every year thousands of devotees become part of Lord Shiva Puja at Amarnath Cave after undertaking very long journey through extreme climatic conditions at such an altitude.
There are number of stories about the discovery of the holy cave of Amarnath. One story talks about a shepherd having found the cave around 15th century. In another story, sage Bhrigu was passing around the caves and he noticed it for the first time. After paying his obeisance and doing puja, he let others know about the Amarnath cave. The reason that devotees take up such an arduous journey to the caves, usually on foot, is the faith that suffering and hardships faced to meet Lord Shiva will help them purge the negativity out of their minds. In spite of adverse weather conditions and deteriorating health, the followers of “Bhole Baba” as he is fondly known, take up the journey to the caves, strengthening the prevalent faith on God. There have been deaths due to health hazards and death threats issued by extremists to deter the devout followers of Lord Shiva, but faith has prevailed as always as ever, augmenting the devotion all the more with each passing year. The religiosity and devoutness of the people for Lord Shiva Puja at Amarnath Cave has made it a popular pilgrimage site equivalent to the “Char Dhams”.
