Considered to be a favourite goddess of Tantric cult, she currently is the prime Goddess of the Kamakhya Devi Temple nestled at Nilachal Hills in Guwahati Assam. Having the privilege of one of the 51 Shakti Peeths, the Kamakhya Temple is one of the most popular sites amongst Hindus for pilgrimage, with thousands of devotees visiting the temple every year.
The temple has been renovated many times between 8th and 17th century, causing the structure of the temple to have a mix of architectures sometimes known as “Nilachal Type”. The temple is divided in four main chambers. The first chamber known as “Garbhagriha” is divided in two parts – the outer one decorated on the styles reminiscent of Khajuraho and Surya Temple. The inner side located below the ground hasn’t got any images except a stone figure shaped like a female generative organ or “Yoni” symbolizing Goddess Kamakhya herself hence worshipped. Another chamber called “Calanta” has a small idol of the Goddess with walls having stone images of Gods. Third chamber called “Pancharatna” has got five shikaras. The last fourth chamber “Natamandira” has got images indicative of the period the temple was made.
As this ancient temple is quite unique and one of its kind in terms of “Tantric” worship, a large number of devotee believing in “Tantra” cult come here to participate in an annual festival called “Ambubachi Mela” organized during Monsoon. It is believed that during the period of this festival, Goddess Kamakhya completes her yearly menstrual cycle. The temple remains closed for the first three days for the menstrual cycle to complete. On fourth day, the doors of the temple are reopened, with thousands of devotees pouring in to take blessings of Goddess Kamakhya Devi.
