Conch (Shankh) a Vedic Vaastu Remedy

Acharya Karan V – Conch or “Shankh” in Hindi, is a sea snail found in the Indian Ocean. It has an outer layer or “Shell” that protects it from foreign attacks. This shell is also generally termed as “Conch” or “Shankh” only. In Vedic Hindu scriptures, Conch holds lot of importance as it is considered to be a sacred symbol representing God Vishnu. Hindus pay veneration to their Gods by blowing a conch as it represents the victory and power of the one being worshipped. In ancient times, conch was blown to proclaim the victory of a king over another. The conch has other symbolic meanings too. It symbolizes purity, positivity, a sense of self-reliance, prosperity and power. “Shankh” has medicinal qualities also. In Ayurveda, the ash of a “Shankh” is used to prepare medicines taken to relieve stomach acidity. The “Shankh Bhasma” (the powder of a conch) is believed to have calcium and iron that acts as an ingredient in many nutrition-giving powders. Blowing of a Conch is also considered to be an air-purifier as the loud vibrations emanating from it tend to kill the germs in the air.

The sound produced from a “Shankh” is venerated as a primal sound of nature, with Hindu scriptures associating it with the divine sound “OM”. In Buddhism, “Shankh” holds the sacred place of a symbol called “Ashthamangala”. The Buddhist believe that the sound produced by the blowing of a Conch is omnipresent, spreading the message of non-violence and love. “Vaastu Shastra” has also emphasized the significance of a “Shankh”. A Conch is believed to be an “energy correcting” device. It has got the power to assimilate the negative vibes prevalent in any space like a house, an office or a factory, converting it into positive waves. A suspended “Shankh” as a pendulum can disperse the negative energies of dullness and depression, bringing the stagnated energies back into flow. A “Shankh” also acts as a casting-out mechanism to revert the incoming flow of negative energies. One can keep “Shankh” at designated places in the house to maintain an atmosphere of tranquillity and spirituality.
