Goddess Bhumi Devi Puja

Acharya Karan V – “Bhumi” or Earth in India is personified as a mother. India, being the country of villages where the primary source of livelihood had always been farming, nurtures the notion of Bhumi as motherland or “Bhu-mata”. A piece of land for a farmer has always been like a mother who nourishes her children, feeding them with breast milk during infancy and as a female of the house cooking food for everyone in the later part of a child’s life. In scriptures, the mother is given the title of a God hence “Bhumi” is also venerated like a Goddess.

According to the legends, Devi Bhumi is considered to be Varaha’s consort. Varaha is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, believed to accommodate the earth on His tusks. In Ramayan, Mata Sita takes final refuge in the womb of the earth, hence called the daughter of Bhumi Devi. She is one of the manifestations of Goddess Laxmi and mother of demon Narakasura. In Northern part of India, Bhu Devi is also believed to have been born as Satyabhama, wife of Lord Krishna.

In Southern part of India, a female saint Andaal who is considered to be one of the 12 Alvar saints is believed to be the incarnation of Bhumi Devi. Devi Andaal, like other Alvar saints was extremely devoted to Lord Vishnu. Devi Andaal’s collections of recitation are still sung by the devotees in the winter festival.

Bhumi Devi is portrayed to be seated on a lotus mounted on four elephants that represent the four directions. With four arms holding a saucer full of herbs, a water vessel, a flower and a pomegranate, she sits on the lotus in a boon-giving position.

With the following chants or puja offering obeisance to Bhumi Devi, one aspiring to do well in job and attain superior position is bound to get positive vibes and intellect to achieve the goals.

“Om Vasundharaya Vidmahi
Bhutadhatraya Dhimahi
Tanno Bhumi Prachodayaat”

The incantations, when chanted with full faith and devotion, can help one attain affluence and prosperity. People with health related issues can get relief with the puja or chanting of the mantra.
