Goddess Kali Puja
Acharya Karan V – In Hinduism, the goddess Kali is an embodiment of ferocious untamed power that can annihilate evil forces without mercy. “Ma Kali”, meaning Mother Kali as she is reverently referred to by her devotees, is a fear-inducing form of Goddess Durga. The word “Kali” is originated from the Sanskrit word “Kala” meaning “Time” or “Death”. It is believed that Kali was born from Goddess Durga’s brow as “Ma Durga” was engaged in a fierce battle with evil forces. As soon as she appeared, Goddess Kali got so much involved with the killing spree that she started destroying everything coming her way. Lord Shiva, in a bid to control her, offered himself under her feet.
Kali was aghast at this sight and stuck out her tongue in surprise as she didn’t expect Lord Shiva to take such a step. Her fierce anger subsided down immediately after that. The depiction of this saga can be seen in the form of paintings today with Goddess Kali having Lord Shiva under her feet. Kali has been immortalized through many a legends like, in one, she destroys the demon “Raktabeeja” in the battleground. As “DakshinaKali”, she gets so carried away with killing that she mistakenly steps foot on her husband Lord Shiva. As “Shamshan Kali”, she has been much venerated by devotees of Tantra. They consider Kali to be the ultimate reality and the most supreme of all the deities. In Tantra, one having the courage of facing Kali at night in cremation ground is appropriate enough to receive the knowledge of Tantra. As “MahaKali”, Kali puja is worshipped in her divine form of one having ten arms, ten heads and ten legs.
Kali’s name has been mentioned first in “Atharva Veda” and her appearance is also quoted in Mahabharata. Kali has earned the name of being “Shakti” or power of Lord Shiva in various “Purana” or Hindu Holy Scriptures. Around Diwali, “Kali Puja” is organized in Bengal where she is considered to be a holy mother, being termed as “Ma Kali”. In Hindu mythology, it is believed that Kali keeps taking rebirths to annihilate the evil like she was born as “Draupadi” in Mahabharta and became a reason for the “Kaurava princes” to be killed. In Kaliyug also it is said that Goddess Kali has presence and her Puja is most result oriented within short span.
