Lord Bhairav Puja

Acharya Karan V – In Hindu Trinity, Lord Shiva, also known as Rudra, holds a sacred place of the one who destroys, paving the path for the new to be created by Lord Brahma. Lord Shiva has another fierce manifestation as Lord Bhairav who annihilates the evil, restoring order in chaos.

According to Shiv Puran, Lord Bhairav was born out of Lord Shiva’s finger nail to teach a lesson to Lord Brahma. As the legend goes, once there was an argument between Lord Vishnu and Brahma over who the chief creator of the universe is. Brahma claimed to be the supreme creator and out of arrogance, started meddling with Lord Shiva’s work. Shiva bore His manifestation with a finger nail and thus born Lord Bhairav who tried to cut Lord Brahma’s head to teach him a lesson. Lord Brahma soon realized his mistake and besought Shiva’s forgiveness. In the present, Lord Bhairav is depicted holding Brahma’s severed head in His hands, symbolically representing the fact that He taught Lord Brahama an important lesson. With fierce eyes, infuriated face and aggressive body language, Lord Bhairav’s idols and pictures represent a scary picture of the God of Annihilation. Carrying weapons like a Trident and a noose, Bhairav is revered by Hindus, Jains and Buddhists. Lord Bhairav puja is done in two forms i.e. Kaal Bhairav (Tamsik form) and Meetha Bhairav (Satvik form).

Lord Bhairav’s temple can be found near the twelve most sacred Jyotirlinga temples spread all over India. The temples are visited by devotees of Lord Shiva as well as the followers of Aghori and Kapalika who hold Bhairav quite sacred. According to a legend, there are 52 forms of Bhairav, with each form representing a guardian for 52 Shaktipeeths found all over India. In many villages in the middle and southern part of India, Lord Bhairav Puja is done as the protecting deity of the village.

It is believed that worshipping of Lord Bhairav can pave the path to success. One paying obeisance with complete faith and devotion will definitely have his desires fulfilled. Lighting an earthen lamp filled with ghee and chanting the following incantations can help one achieve the desired result from the efforts:

“Om Kalakala ya vidhmaye,
Kala Theeta ya dhimahi,
Thanno Kal Bhairav Prachodayaat”

‘Om Kaal Bhairavaya Namah”

Om Ashta Bhairavaya Namah”
