Major Fasts (or Vrata) Significances

Acharya Karan V – From ancient times, Religion has played a significant role in most of the major turning points in Indian history. We have always offered our homage to God in the form of money, goods or other self-imposed religious practices. “Vrata” or, the act of fasting – as it is known in English – is a religious practice one keeps, to receive divine grace and get his desired fulfilled. One can keep “Vrata” in many forms like abstaining from eating for a day or keeping silent, visiting a holy place for specified days or donating food or other goods to the needy. Keeping a “Vrata” requires strict discipline and determination. Self-control is considered to be one of the chief elements while observing “Vrata”. In Indian scriptures, one has been allowed to have someone else keep a fast for them. There are “Vrata” observed on a specific day of a week, for example, “Som var Vrata” which is kept by devotees to pay homage to Lord Shiva.

Then, there are “Vrata” observed after certain number of days like fortnight. For example, there is “VaraLakshmi Vrata” kept on the last Friday falling in the bright fortnight in the month of July or August. The Vrata is dedicated to Goddess MahaLaxmi. “Satya Narayan Vrat” is observed on the evening of Sankranti or Purnima and is dedicted to Lord Vishnu. “Ekadashi Vrat” is kept on every 11th of Hindu calendar to seek blessings from Lord Vishnu. In the Hindu month of “Magh” and “Phalgun”, Shivratri is observed to obtain divine grace from Lord Shiva. There are “Vrata” that are observed at a certain time in a year with a festival like “Navratri” which is one of the most famous occasions for Hindus who celebrate this festival for nine days, paying homage to the nine different forms of Goddess Durga. After the observation of Nine days of Vrata, the tenth day is celebrated as “Dusshera”. The devotees keep fast and abstain from indulging in certain activities restricted during the “Vrata”. Though there are five types of “Navratri” but the most famous one is the “Sharad Navratri” observed before “Dusshera”. Similarly, there is “Ganesh Chaturthi” celebrated between August and September. The devotees observe fast or keep themselves away from certain type of food restricted during these occasions.
