Q – Manish Arora, Navi Mumbai, India – What is Vaastu Purusha?
Karan Sekhri – The word ‘Vaastu’ is of Sanskrit origin meaning ‘DWELLING’ and Purusha is the Cosmic Man. The legend says that the Vaastu Purusha originated from the sweat of Lord Shiva when he was battling the ferocious demon ‘Andhakasura’. Vaastu Purusha got out of control and became a destructive force until the heavenly Gods overpowered him and brought him down to the earth with face down and back facing the sky. His head faced the North-East and his feet were placed in the South-West. It took 45 deities to hold him in place at various points on his body. 32 of them namely occupied the outer enclosure and 13 stayed in the inner enclosure. It is also believed that Vaastu Purusha is the son of mother earth sleeping face down on the ground with his head in the North East and feet in the South West. He wakes up only for a few days in the year during which the Bhoomi Pujan should be done as described in the Hindu Panchang or Almanac.
Vaastu Purusha Mandala – Also referred to as the energy grid square, Vaastu Purusha Mandala is the space of construction occupied by the Vaastu Purusha. It is the key to understanding the Vaastu Shastra.
The principal Gods in the grid pattern are
North Kubera, Lord of Wealth
South Yama, Lord of Death
East Aditya, the Sun God
West Varuna, Lord of Water
North-East Lord Shiva
South-East Agni, Lord of fire
North-West Vayu, Lord of wind
South-West Pitru, Nairutya, Niruthi, Kanni, Lord of Ancestors
Center Brahma, the Creator of the Universe
The Vaastu Purusha troubles those who construct houses, buildings and dig wells and tanks in the direction he can see and where he rests his feet and in the direction he lays his head and back. Thus began the tradition of worshipping the Vaastu Purush before the laying the foundation stone of the building or house and satisfying him with ‘Homa’.
