Acharya Karan – Lord Shiva is considered to have five aspects or faces in which one aspect is known as Aghor, it is made up of two words ‘A’ which means ‘without’ and ‘Ghor’ means ‘darkness’ hence Aghor stands for of state of being without darkness or absolute illumination. Lord Shiva’s brightest and most illuminated form is known as Aghori. Aghori means someone who defies darkness and takes you to a bright light of purity and spirituality here darkness can be related to a form of fear as well. Aghori saints are the devotees of Lord Shiva who have sacrificed the pleasures of life for this sole purpose. They live in isolation especially near cremation or funeral grounds where it is said to have presence of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Often they are seen to be indulged in activities which are prohibited in society or human beings for the sanctity sake, like exhuming human corpses from ground, applying their ashes on body, making skull bowls from human bones and skull, eating human flesh or unburned bodies, drinking alcohol, consuming bhang (or other forms of Cannabis or Marijuana) and living naked etc. which all is considered unholy or sins in regular religion or society in general, they do all such activities except eating beef (cow’s flesh) is prohibited in Aghor culture. They have this logic that everything and every task in this world are provided by Lord Brahma (the creator) hence how it could be unholy or sin.

Aghori Saints have presence and command lot of respect in the rural or semi urban areas of India they are blessed with many spiritual powers including special healing powers etc. but there is a primary difference between Aghori Saint and Aghori Tantric. Aghori Saints are those who in real follow the rules of Aghor and are true devotees of Lord Shiva, they are very limited in numbers and those who are real Aghori Saints doesn’t communicate or show their presence to the people communities. They prefer ultimate isolation and have no fixed residence or house can been see only by luck or chance but on the other hand Aghori tantric are much more accessible further they play around with fears of the people, mostly they don’t follow the real Aghor or Devotion Tapasya to Lord Shiva.

It is mentioned in ancient scripture that any individual can do the worship of Aghor Aspect of Lord Shiva which is one of the five aspects. This will get him or her much closer to Lord Shiva and will be highly beneficial spiritually for overall progress in life. Aghor form of puja of Lord Shiva can done by every individual, on Shivratri or Mahashivratri or any Mondays by offering Bhang (a form of cannabis plant locally found in India) and Datura (or Dhatura) which is a genus of nine species of poisonous vespertine flowering plants belonging to the family Solanaceae. In my personal view, Aghor cult or culture is defined as sense of freedom to achieve Lord Shiva, which in other words the freedom of eating or drinking or remaining in totally natural state just to follow the spiritual path leading to Lord Shiva. The main motive being, there shouldn’t be any hindrances or difficulty to leaving the society or family and residing in isolation, that you can have whatever you want or whatever is available. But people often confuse or wrongly inherit – that by consuming cannabis or human flesh or remaining naked covered with ashes will lead to Lord Shiva – this is totally wrong perspective. Aghor is a journey not the destination.
