They are believed to be the most perturbing elements in Astrology, causing lot of unrest and disorder. In Vedic Astrology, Rahu is known as one of the nine planets (Navagraha) who is accompanied by Ketu. Rahu Kala is the term given to the time of the day when Rahu becomes active and spreads his influence. In Indian Mythology, Rahu was one of the “Asur” named “SavarBhanu” who tried to taste the “Amrit” (nectar) that resulted from the churning of the ocean. The “Amrit” was supposed to be given to “Devtas” only and Rahu, pretending to be one of them, sat with them, hoping to get some. No sooner did he become successful in swallowing some of the nectar than his head was severed by Lord Vishnu (incarnated as Mohini, a female). The severed head went into the sky and came to be known as Rahu. The rest of the body was known as Ketu. Rahu is believed to be the cause behind Solar Eclipses whereas Ketu for Lunar Eclipses.

As per the Hindu Astrology, Rahu Kaal or Rahu Dasha can either bring lot of good luck or an extremely bad time for an individual. The kind of time Rahu bestows upon someone is dependent on the controlling planet. Considered to be the symbol of deceit, Rahu is believed to cause an individual to have a lot of materialistic gains from the application of unfair means. Worshipping Goddess Durga brings pacification to Rahu who showers wealth on the devotee. Like Rahu Kaal, Ketu Kaal also causes bad influences. But it is considered to be a “blessing in disguise” as Ketu is believed to be intentionally causing loss, sorrow and unhappiness, in an attempt to push an individual towards the path of spirituality and enlightenment. It also profits an individual with lot of wealth, health and other worldly pleasures. Rahu and Ketu don’t have any “Rashi” attached to them. In Vedic Astrology, they are considered to be the sworn enemies of the Sun and the Moon, causing eclipses. Rahu, believed to exalt itself in Taurus, can wreak havoc if acting negative in the horoscope of an individual.
