What are the references of Astrology in Ramayana and Mahabharata?

Acharya Karan V – The validity of the ancient knowledge of Vedic Hindu Astrology can be substantiated with the fact that people have been practising it for ages. The text of both the epics is interspersed with lot of instances that show that the people from ancient civilizations have been applying the principles of Vedic Astrology to seek guidance.

One can find the details of the birth-charts of the individuals existing in the time of Ramayana and Mahabharata. The ancient texts have references to the planets or “Grahs”, solar and lunar eclipses, Nakshatras and the position of the sun and the moon at the time of someone’s birth. The concept of the Zodiacs did exist as mentioned in the “Ayodhya Kand” of the Ramayana. Some Sanskrit verses or “Shlokas” do talk about lord Ram being born under the zodiac Cancer. The composer of the epic Ramayana – Maharishi Valmiki – does talk about the position of the sun and moon and other details of the planets at the time of Lord Ram’s birth. According to him, Lord Ram was born in Uttarayana (the period of half-year), in the month of Chaitra. The “Nakshatra” mentioned by him is “Punarvasu” with the zodiac being Cancer or “Kark”. It strengthens the belief that a system of prediction did exist based on the divisions of the planets.

Similarly, the other epic Mahabharata has instances where the ominous signs loomed as a prelude to a catastrophe of exponential proportions. Before the war, there were occurrences of eclipses showing a bad omen. A draught occurring at the time of a specific position of planets has also been mentioned in the text. In the Bhisma Parva, Dhritrashtra does talk about the bad influence of the planet Shani becoming the reason of the great disaster resulting from the latent animosities. There are many other enigmatic textual references of astrological importance mentioned in the epics at many other places. These references have been coming to the fore as these ancient texts in Sanskrit are being deciphered.
