Q – Siddharth Dhamija, Delhi, India – What is the significance of a mala (rosary) and which one would be good for chanting Goddess Lakshmi’s Mantras?

Karan Sekhri – The significance of ‘Japa’ (chanting the Mantra) is much more than any other form but it is little lesser than the ‘Tapa’ which is advance level of spirituality or spiritual journey. The ’Japa’ can be performed for any God, Goddess or their individual power with the help of its related mantra.

It said that any specific Mantra gets ‘Siddh’ or materialize only after its continuous Japa for so many times or counts. So a ‘Mala’ or Rosary helps one to keep count of the Mantra chanting. The other significance is that individual can concentrate or get into ‘Dhyan’ mode without giving much attention to the counts. ‘Mala’ facilitates the simultaneous action of concentration (Dhyan) with automatic Mantra chant counting. One Mantra chant or count is said for each bead while spinning the thumb around each bead. It could be rotated clockwise, anticlockwise or with certain finger as per the Mantra or motive. A ‘Mala’ contains 109 beads i.e. 108 regular beads and one ‘Sumeru’ or ‘Guru’ Bead. While chanting the Mantras we start from this ‘Sumeru’ bead and change Mala’s direction once we reach this bead. In a way we chant 109 mantras per Mala but the count is taken only 100 as 8 mantras are kept for buffer or mistakes and one is for Sumeru. In market we can get different sizes of Mala as per number of beads i.e. 27, 54, 108 and 1008. The best Mala or rosary for ‘Japa’ is with 108 beads as 27 and 54 beads Malas are usually for wearing around the wrist or neck and 1008 beads wouldn’t be easy to handle.

We have different Mala or rosary for different Planets, God, Goddess and Powers. Like for example-
