Significance of Nakshatras – Astrological Importance

Acharya Karan V – In Hindu Astrology, recently christened as Vedic Astrology, Nakshatras, along with “Rashis” play an important role in predicting the future of a person. One of the oldest Hindu scriptures Vedas talks about Nakshatras in great details. Nakshatras are akin to zodiacs or “Rashis” but they are more precise in their meanings. The interpretations of Nakshtras are done based on the constellations and the positions of the stars. They represent a specific portion of the sky, having a mythological story attached to them. Each Nakshatra has a reigning deity attached to it and they tell a story which has symbols found in our lives. There are 27 Nakshatras as per the traditional Hindu Astrology, there are 28. Each Nakshatra is of 13 degrees, 20 mins. The first Nakshatra starts at the beginning of Aries at zero. They end at 30 degrees of Pisces.

They are also called “the houses of the moon” or the lunar mansion because the moon covers 13.20 per day. Hence, the moon comes within the range of a Nakshatra every day. All the 27 Nakshatras are the symbol of a 27 different varieties of consciousness. As each Nakshatra falls into altleast one “Rashi”, they have got the power to influence it. Each Nakshatra is further divided in four segments, called “Pada”. Each pada holds a particular significance in the life of a person. In Hindu Astrology, a newly born child has it name started with the syllable represented by the “pada” being traversed by the Moon at the time of the birth of the child. The Nine planets or “Graha” as they are popularly known, govern each Nakshatra. All the nine planets repeat the cycle three times to cover all the 27 Nakshatras. Each planet, known as the “lord” for that Nakshatra decides a planetary period called “Dasha”. “Dasha” is believed to be of huge significance in Hindu Astrology while predicting a person’s future.

The study of the position of Nakshatra can also help determine the duration of an illness or disease. The prediction can help one take more care of his or her health. Each Nakshtra resembles one animal form, while analyzing horoscope one should always consider this aspect as it tells a lot about the basic nature or behavioural attributes of the individual.
